The Pieter Stoutenburg family originated in the Province of Utrecht of the Netherlands. Knowing a little history of both the Netherlands and its Dutch colony, Nieuw Nederland is important to have an understanding Pieter Stoutenburg’s life in the 17th century.

Pieter arrived in New Amsterdam sometime before his marriage in 1649. By the time that Pieter arrived, it was over twenty-five years since the first families settled on the island that we call Manhattan at Fort Orange around Albany. I have found that there was a cruise ship named Johan Van OldenBarnevelt [Nederland: 1930-1963] in the service of the Asterdam-Indonesian line. It served as a troop ship during WWII. Returned to service in 1946, refitted for round the world service in 1959 with new funnel tops. In 1963 it was sold to the Greek line and re-named Lakonia and that same year it caught fire, sunk and 128 people were lost.
